Still Cool Friends,
Relationships are a complicated, even when they are not. Did you know that in 7th grade John-Ryan Shea once wrote a love letter to a girl in French? Or that Gavin was dumped by a girl with a big forehead over a baseball mitt? In this episode, we are going deep into the vault and talking about the loves of our past the songs that went with them. Why? Because it’s been 10-years time since JRS last experienced the morbid decline of a relationship and he misses the breakup songs. Those feelings of heartbreak and rejection pair so well with The Cure, Depeche Mode, Elliot Smith and so many more. We all have songs that help us work through these emotions and/or convey the emotion we cannot natively. They are a means of expressing yourself without having to possess any intrinsic artistic talent.
That said, they can also be a crutch of wallow. Whereas JRS would explore the depths of his heart through the parallel stylings of various singer-songwriters, Gavin would go on a drunken bender of booze and mid-80’s pop songs to get over lost loves. The dichotomy of our personalities allows for a comedic lens to be put on these once difficult times. Fact is, we all deal with breakups in different ways, but hindsight is the best comedic filter for anything is life. Time really does heal all wounds, but that doesn’t mean you should forget the power of the tracks that got you through. In fact, today we are celebrating them.
Along for the ride, we also divulge the awkward nature of our 7th-grade relationships, the Summer superhero blockbuster parade and cap it all off with a half-drunk debate on gentrification, Donald Trump, Guns and Roses, and Top Gun’s gay agenda.Have a breakup song that got you through rough times?
